Three True Men

Elder Matthew Cowley. He went on a mission to New Zealand in 1914. He arrived there without a companion, and his mission president was on a different island. His determination to learn the difficult and unexplored Maori language took him only 3 months. Because of his incredible mastery of the Maori language and the closeness he had with the Maori people, his mission was extended 2 years beyond the usual 3 which allowed him to translate the Book of Mormon, D&C and Pearl of Great Price into Maori. Later, in his apostleship he became known as the "Polynesian Apostle" becuase of his love for the islands as well as his exceptional compassion. In a stake conference here in La'ie he expressed his hopes that one day New Zealanders would have a villiage here, as well as Samoans, Tongans, Tahitians... all islanders of the sea. His vision has become what is now the Polynesian Cultural Center.
Joseph F. Smith. This man is the son of Hyrum and was named after our excellent Joseph Smith, and was 10th president of the Church. When Hyrum died, Joseph was only 10 years old, and being the oldest son, it was up to him to take charge and get his family across the plains. His incredible strength in the church allowed him to serve a mission at the age of 15 to the islands which lasted for 4 years. His appreciation and love for the islanders allowed the gospel to spread into their hearts. In a time where the Hawaiian culture was being exterminated, he held an inspired and compassionate love for the people and culture here. He said about his time here, "They [the Hawaiian people] had different habits to anything I had before known, and their food, and dress and houses and everything were new and strange.... For three months this seclusion from the world continued, but the history of that short period of my life never can be told. I had ample time to feel after the Lord and to draw near to him with my whole soul"Monday, June 15, 2009
My coolness factor is unbelievably off the charts
CHECK THIS MOMMA OUT! You all might not know this... but I am so awesome that I cruise this baby around everywhere I go in Hawaii! And if that isn't sick steezy enough, my kick-a roommate ALSO has one of these rust-bucket-basket-bearing-pedal-and-chain get ups. When we go out on the town, it is the best night of the week. For everyone at BYUH.
(But of course we're always promptly back to our dorm and cuddly in bed by our midnight curfew)
The pee your pants and excruciating laugh til you literally die funniness factor of watching the Hulk, Phantom of the Opera, and Scarlet Pimpernel with a Jesse Draper commentary is equivalent to playing spoons with Asian people. Sascha, imagine Wai times ten and they're all yelling at eachother. Occaisionally posing with a peace sign when a pic is being taken.
Another fun thing. Boys don't believe girls work out. So I'm hangin out with all these white guys and we went to this one girls house which about 5 other girls live in. They seriously had Gold's Gym inside thier garage. With a pool table. After observance and reflection, one boy inquired, Do guys live here too? Who uses this stuff? Girls don't lift weights. I laughed. Oh poor little white boy

Give me a break
Ice cream in Hawaii is SOOOOOO FREAKIN GOOD!!! I don't know if it's because eating it fast enough before it liquidizes is a tough challenge, or if Hawaii people just have exquisite tastes. But its fantastic.

8 days!
9 Days and Counting...
Ah the beauty of saying unimportant things. Thanks Rach, it was amazing to witness you say 'november' with almost as much enthusiasm as you would have said 'october'.
I am in utter elation. I feel as clean and blooming and bright on my inside as it feels on the inside of the Temple. What an amazing thing to witness and cuddle up with tonight. I am a new book, with the new book smell and the new book clean feel. Crisp pages, snappy cover, stiff spine, perfectly cornered edges... the best part will be reading the adventures
(still to come)

10 Days and Counting...
You know, it's too bad that the death of an uncle and moving away (to basically a different country...) were the only ways for me to truly understand and feel just HOW MUCH i love love love love love my family. I, who am a very emotionally stunted human being, find the bodily reaction to such a love is utterly painful. An aching crying pain. But all in all, it is beautiful.
An overheard conversation betwixt my mom and dad. Emotional temperature was totally serious.
"Where did my head go?"
"I don't know, I haven't seen your head for a long time."

11 days and counting...
This blog is for the good of all Wookies. And their babies. Cookies. Wookies with cookies. And a tribute to Chubbuck, a close relative.
At work there is a normal door, and a revolving door. the normal door says "please use the revolving door."
